Save Money on Vacation

by Michael Saha | Travel and Leisure > Switch Category
There are a whole lot of wonderful places in the world to visit. Vacation is probably one of the most pleasurable things people can do. The problem is that many people want to travel but cannot do so because of budget constraints. During the holidays, a lot of people want to travel abroad to be with their relatives or friends. Others want to spend the holidays in places they haven't been to. Given the chance, people would travel if they have the money to spend for it.

Saving money on vacation will be a lot easier for you if you have already planned how much you are going to spend for your holiday travel. You shouldn't fall short of this amount. In fact, it would be better if you save more than this amount so you don't have to worry about your budget while you're traveling. Here are many simple ways to cut costs without impacting on the fun or comfort of your trip.

Don't think that late bookings are always best. Late bookings can be effective if you do not have a particular destination in mind, but if you already know exactly where you want to go you could enjoy big savings if you start looking early before airlines and tour operators hike up their prices. If you are able to travel on a slow day like a Tuesday, Wednesday or an early Sunday morning flight, you can often save yourself a lot of money.

If you're booking a vacation and you know you're going to need a hotel, you can often save a lot of money by opting to book a complete air, car and hotel package. Many vacation providers can offer huge discounts if you purchase everything you need in one package deal. But remember, Package holidays are not always cheaper. Check prices with a range of airlines and compare prices on hotels in the area that you want to stay.

Traveling in the off-season is a great way to see some of the world's greatest sites while avoiding the crowds and holding onto a lot of money.

Never change money at hotel reception desks. Staff may tell you their exchange is competitive, but, hotel rates are almost always terrible. It's a good idea to have some local currency when arriving in a country. But do a little checking: sometimes it's better to change money on arrival at the airport rather than in your own country. Also, try and convert what currency you have left at the airport rather than after you get home. You may also consider having some travelers' cheques issued in local currency before you leave home.
