Tropical fish are like other species in many respects, and that includes the fact that they have diseases or disorders that may resemble those of other animals, but are specific to the fish themselves. Be careful not to buy diseased or unhealthy fish as disease spreads quickly in a fish tank and the other fish could easily become sick and die. Here are few tropical fish diseases. Fungal and protozoan infection will produce white growths that eventually turn into spot on the skin. The small and white spots usually appear on the scale, head and fins of tropical fish. This is very common disease in new aquarium. The fish will breathe rapidly and have clamped fins. Other types cause excessive slim on the body, frayed fins, bloated body and a lack of appetite.
There are Effects of cotton wool on the tropical fish body. These diseases are caused by fungal infection. Fungal infection will produce white growths that eventually turn into cotton like tuffs on the skin. Fungal diseases will usually occur after the fish has already been weakened through stress. In some cases the fish will appear sluggish and in the latter stages develop cysts.
Exophthalmia that causes the eyes to bulge hence gives this ailment the more common name of pop-eye. Pop eye could be because of bacteria, poor water quality vitamin deficiency etc. This is hard to treat disease; broad spectrum antibiotic can be used to cure this.
Tumors; these generally show themselves as a lump under or on the skin of fish. For the most part, tumors are benign, although it's possible for one to grow so large that the fish's quality of life declines and you may have to euthanize them. Internal tumors can be quite advanced before the fish shows any signs, such as a swelling of the abdomen.
The best way to avoid tropical fish diseases is to have a clean tank and provide adequate nutrition. New fish should always be quarantined for two to four weeks.
Whether you are buying tropical fish for the first time or buying more tropical fish to add to your aquarium, there are certain thing you should look for to tell if the prospective tropical fish are healthy or not. Usually tropical fish should be swimming easily around the aquarium with the other fish. If a fish is swimming upside down it is probably dying. The eyes of the fish should be bright and clear. And the scales should be shiny and free of white spots and excessive mucus.
