Reading has found its way into our hearts and seems the perfect advice to pass on to other families looking for a great family-time activity, a stepping stone for learning life's greatest lessons, or simply a relaxing retreat from the stress of our everyday lives. Children progress through the developmental stages as they become better readers. These stages are not determined by the child's age or grade level however, the stage is determined by the child's experiences, understanding and attitude. The best thing you can do for your child's health is read to him/her.
Deciding on which book to buy for your children can feel tremendous when standing in the children's area of your local book store. Children age between 5 and 7; the children are acquiring basic book knowledge and learning that illustrations and books tell a story. Beginning books for this level should have natural language, predictable text and clear pictures that follow the story. When your children between 7 and 9, they have gained enough control over their reading that they are independent and fluent. They use illustrations to gain additional meaning in the text. They enjoy playing with words, humor and poetry. They are starting to enjoy non fiction books.
You can find book at your local library and garage sales. There are great places to find used books for children. Most libraries hold a used book sale each year where you can buy great childrens books at rock bottom prices. This can be a great way to introduce new books to your children. Another place is book clubs. Book clubs offer an opportunity to build up your own personal library in your home. There are wide selections of children's book clubs available where you can select books from a catalog and order them from home. Your child will get excited about selecting a new book each month and then have great anticipation waiting for his or her new book to arrive in the mail.
Just remember that children love to read and if your children brings you a book and asks you to read, you should take the time to do so. Read to your children. Read for fun, spiritual insight, character development, for awareness of the world around you, to gain knowledge and to show love to another. Reading will build a love of books and foster great memories of quiet time spent together.
