Child internet safety

by Mike Lawrence
Category : Parenting
Parents all over the world know that there are predators who want nothing more than to lure children into their trap. But if you are aware that these people exist, you have already taken the first step to keeping your child safe. The internet is a powerful tool for schoolwork and knowledge. It offers children an important research, information and communication tool. At the same time, parents are concerned about the risks their children face online. It is, a significant danger, offering pornography to underage children and the real danger of a personal contact with an undesirable internet “friend”. No amount of government laws and regulations on the internet can completely control the bad elements of our society. The following suggestions are offered to protect your children from becoming a victim on the Internet.

You can physically keep the computer in a place in the house where the child is not left alone with the computer. Keep your computer in a communal place, and ensure the screen is readily visible rather than hidden from view. That way you can supervise its use and what is being accessed. The computer needs to be in a family room, not in the child’s bedroom.

Parents should get computer smart and learn how the internet functions. Understand parenting controls on your Internet browser and how to block websites and emails. Ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) about how special software programs can be used to help protect your child if you would like to keep tighter control of surfing practices. Just like your cable TV which provides a parental control feature, there are tools available from your internet service provider that will allow you to control your child's internet usage. The internet service provider is the company that you got the internet connection from.

The single most important thing a parent can do is to get involved. If you want your kids to use the Internet safely and responsibly then you need to pay attention to their usage of it. Discuss online stranger danger with your children.

Do not allow your child to have access to your credit card details or account details for e-commerce or auction sites. Explain what Agreements, privacy policy mean and the consequences.

Review their site daily. Be sure your child reports anything unusual that they observe on the internet, and, certainly never to answer any rude or offensive e-mails or messages.

Do not allow your child to send or receive any pictures on the internet from anyone not personally known to you. Don’t allow your child to give out any personal information. This includes name, hobbies, telephone number, email address or school information.

Overall, kid’s internet safety is very important, and one of the best places to learn about this is in a school environment. If your child is not being taught about internet safety you will want to find out why. Be responsible for keeping your child safe and don't negate your responsibility.
