Faux painting technique

Faux painting becomes very popular in interior designs. It is a decorative hand-created painting technique. It captures warmth of textiles, depth, texture and blends of light and color to create one of kind wall treatments for your home or office. There are numerous techniques of Faux painting. You can add some color, depth, elegance and charm to your home using one or more of these popular faux painting techniques. Some of the techniques are:

Combing - Combing can give your walls a very dramatic look. Mix your texture color with finishing glaze. When you start rolling on your next color, go from ceiling to floor for about three feet. Then take a dry comb or a wallpaper brush and drag it from ceiling to floor in one continuous motion. Wipe off your comb and repeat. Straight lines are just one of your options with the combing technique. You can create many patterns using your imagination.

Ragging - Ragging is a faux finish technique that uses a rag to produce a mottled decorative effect. Ragging is similar to sponging and can produce a very soft, romantic look. Ragging is a simple faux finish. Soak your rag in the glaze mixture and blot off the excess. Start dabbing the rag on the wall in various patterns. You can produce a soft effect with less paint or you can use more paint to create a dramatic effect. Try your rag in several different positions to get the desired effect.

Sponging – Sponging is a very easy and fun technique that gives a room a pretty textured look. Mix the paint with a finishing glaze. Dip the sponge in the paint. Do small areas at a time so the paint does not dry where you are working. Be creative with your color combinations and your dabbing patterns.

Stenciling - Stenciling is an easy way to add a custom pattern to your walls. If you are looking to redecorate a small room with high ceilings, a nice stenciled border will help create the feel of a larger room, horizontally. Turn the stencil vertically and you’ll remedy the opposite problem. It is widely used in living rooms, floors, bathrooms and furniture. To paint with stencils, I’d recommend using latex paint or artist’s paints. Choose your colors carefully. Tape your stencil to the surface to be painted. Apply the paint in circular movements over the stencil. Allow each layer to dry before attempting any overlay stenciling.
