Samurai Sword

by B Slatkin | Hobbies > Switch Category
Samurai sword was believed to have a kind of mystical air about it. A warrior approached his sword like a thing, or rather a person, imbued with the power and supernatural properties with utmost awe and respect. The samurai sword, or katana, as it is more correctly known, is made of the strongest steel. Made hundreds of years ago in feudal Japan, many examples of these swords are still in pristine condition. The Samurai gets its strength from the many separate and symbiotic processes that the sword smiths of the era employed.

Samurai warriors in ancient Japan would usually carry two swords for self-defense, a katana and wakizashi. The katana was traditionally used as a primary weapon while the wakizashi was a secondary weapon. You will notice that Katanas almost always have a longer blade and handle than the wakizashi. There is also has another type of katana, "Chisa" katana and “Nodachi” katana. The dimensions of chisa samurai sword are usually somewhere between the katana and wakizashi making it the perfect size for indoor or outdoor use. Nodachi is extra-long blade and massive handle. These samurai swords were best suited for ninjas with maximum power and strength due to their extreme size and weight.

One of the most important qualities is the samurai's soft malleable inner core. This embedded soft steel inner core allows the weapon to absorb outer hits on its striking surface without serious damage. They will stand up to the very best modern steel making technology of today. The point of a samurai sword is called a Kissaki. This is the hardest part of the sword to polish and forge and to hand create a quality one would require an extremely skilful artisan. The value of a sword is determined largely by the quality of the point.

Some sword owners assume that high price must equal high quality. While this is generally a fair assumption, it is important that you know how to examine your samurai sword set for common defects and flaws. Purchasing a high quality samurai sword set is very exciting and fulfilling.
