How to Start a Collection

by Mile Kheterpal | Hobbies > Switch Category
To start a collection, think about some of the things that interest you. Decide if you want to collect items just for the enjoyment of collecting or if you would be more interested in collecting items that may become valuable investments. A collection does not have to be valuable all it has to be is important to the people that have compiled the collection. There are a wide range of hobbies for collectors to choose from including collecting postage stamps, badges, autographs, vintage cars, and so many more. These items can be found at flea markets, antique stores, or garage sales depending on what style of item the collector is actually collecting.

Many people who collect valuables to build an impressive collection for sheer joy of having that collection. Others might hope that one day their collections will be worth something. One thing to remember when you begin a collection is to find something you absolutely love. When you collect something, find pieces that have special meaning. Adding unique and meaningful items as part of your collection not only gives you ample conversation pieces, but it represents special times in your life. You may not even realize when you started collecting something because many times it just happens to accumulate over a period of time, sometimes years. Because collections normally accumulate over a period of time, it will help if you can make out a "wish list" to narrow down specific items you are looking to find.

Once you have decided what to collect, the joy of the hunt begins. My favorite places to go for my treasures are always the places where I can find the ultimate deals. The places are auction houses, garage sales, antique districts, flea markets, consignment shops and thrift stores. If your hobby becomes a passion, you will want to invest in a good price guide. There are specialized guides for specific items and general guides that cover a wide range of objects.

As your collection grows, learn about each item. Find out how it was made, who made it and what they used for materials. You may also want to catalogue your collection to help you keep things organized in case you decide to sell a certain item or trade it for another piece. Knowledge of the background of the items one purchases is an absolute must before making purchases for ones antique collection. This is because the value of old things varies according to time, place and object.
