Colon cancer stages and treatment

Cancer is a disease which can affect cells from all organs. The colon cancer affects the cells of the colon, determining them to proliferate in an uncontrollable way. Generally the most indicated procedure in trying to treat colon cancer is surgery. By surgery the doctors will remove the tumor from the colon. If the cancer spread, the doctors will recommend you chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Generally, colon cancer can be dividing into four stages.
Stage 0, colon cancer is found in the innermost lining of the colon only. The treatment is surgery to remove the colon cancer without cutting through the abdominal wall.
Stage I, the colon cancer has begun to spread, but is still in the inner lining of the colon or rectum. The treatment is resection/ removal of colon cancer by joining the cut ends of the colon.
Stage II, the colon cancer extends more deeply into through the colon or rectum. The treatment is chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or biological therapy after surgery.
Stage III, the colon cancer has spread to lymph nodes, but has not been carried to distant parts of the body. The treatment is chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and biological therapy after surgery.
Stage IV, the colon cancer has been carried through the lymph system to distant parts of the body. This is known as metastasis. The treatment is surgery to remove parts of other organs such as the liver, lungs, and ovaries where the cancer may have spread.

There are researches showing that fiber intake can protect against colon cancer. Other way to prevent colon cancer is that you can eat a low-fat diet with fruits and vegetables, intake of vitamin D, Calcium, vitamin E or you can have physical activity to reduce the risk of having colon cancer.
