Colon cancer symptoms

Colon is an extremely important part of our digestive system and is a storage tube for solid waste that passes through our bodies. Its main function is to extract water and salt from feces. Colon cancer develops when harmful cells begin to grow abnormally inside the colon.

Colon related diseases and incorrect eating habits are said to increase the risk of colon cancer. Studies have shown that the cells leading to colon cancer were once polyps, benign tumor inside the colon. When polyps are left untreated, they can become cancerous. Smoking is a risk factor for colon cancer. It increases chances because ingested tobacco sends carcinogens to the colon and tobacco use also increases size of the polyps. Colon cancer is also linked to genes and there are theories that suggest that people with family history of colon cancer are at greater risk of developing colon cancer. However, colon cancer is generally found in older people i.e. people who are above the age of 50.

Colon cancer usually will not have any symptoms. Unfortunately it will be in the later stages that symptoms will show. Symptoms of colon cancer include presence of blood in the stools and bleeding of the rectum. Some of the other signs of colon cancer could include change in bowel regularity, benign polyps in the colon, a decrease in stool size, cramps, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, the existence of pain in the stomach and continuous fatigue.
