Alcoholism is one of the most common addictions among the students all over the world. It’s no longer just a problem among the adults; even teenagers are now on the greatest risk. Starting from a single shot, the next time you’ll be consuming nearly a case without you noticing it. That’s how addictive alcohol is!
Alcoholism is the consumption of alcoholic beverages to the extent that interferes with the alcoholic's normal personal, family, social, or work life behaviour. The primary effect of alcoholism is to push the person to drink at times and in amounts that are damaging. The secondary damage caused by an inability to control one's drinking manifests in many ways. The most common effect of alcoholism is difficulty walking, blurred vision, slurred speech, slowed reaction times, and impaired memory.
Students should always be reminded of the very harmful effects of alcohol abuse that will interfere and cause great damage on their studies. Adolescents and college students are at high risk for initiating alcohol use and high-risk drinking. Alcohol can produce detectable impairments in memory after only a few drinks and, as the amount of alcohol increases, so does the degree of impairment. Large quantities of alcohol, especially when consumed quickly and on an empty stomach, can produce a blackout, or an interval of time for which the intoxicated person cannot recall key details of events, or even entire events. Drinkers who experience blackouts typically drink too much and too quickly, which causes their blood alcohol levels to rise very rapidly. College students may be at particular risk for experiencing a blackout, as an alarming number of college students engage in binge drinking. Binge drinking, for a typical adult, is defined as consuming five or more drinks in about 2 hours for men or four or more drinks for women.
A hangover after a drinking session is also one of the main problems of every student, not to mention if there is an exam. Hangovers are the body's reaction to poisoning and withdrawal from alcohol. Hangovers begin 8 to 12 hours after the last drink and symptoms include fatigue, depression, headache, thirst, nausea, and vomiting. The severity of symptoms varies according to the individual and the quantity of alcohol consumed. Your brain and body will not function effectively thereby interfering with your studies.
Alcohol abuse among students is not good. Alcohol rehab is a necessary thing for students who are hooked on alcohol abuse. Effective alcohol rehab programs provide a variety of services aimed at meeting the treatment goals and needs of the people they serve. Don’t let alcohol addiction ruin your future, take the first step to leave it all behind.
