by Jack Finn | Health > Switch Category

Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin, because it is produced in naked skin that is exposed to strong sunlight. Sunshine is a significant source of vitamin D because UV rays from sunlight trigger vitamin D synthesis in the skin. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D helps to form and maintain strong bones.

Vitamin D is readily available in fortified milk and dairy products. You can also get vitamin D in milk, herring, mackerel, tuna, sardines, eggs, and cereals. And the most common source of vitamin D is sunshine. As you grow older, it may be difficult to get all of the vitamin D that your body needs, and you may need to take vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D is important not only for bone health. Previous studies showed it also protects the body from colds, diabetes, tuberculosis, and cancer. It lowers the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers. This vitamin can also slow the affects of arthritis and lessen back pain in many individuals.

Deficiencies of vitamin D in children are indicated by the presence of rickets, a disease that deforms the bones and teeth. In adults, deficiencies are indicated by the presence of osteomalacia, osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes, muscle and bone pain.

We should not take our vitamin D deficiency lightly, do something about it today.
