Every year we see a rise in the percentage of work related accidents. These accidents could have been avoided only if the employees know how to keep their workplace safe.
Keeping the workplace safe is not just the work of the health and safety department. It should be everybody’s responsibility. If you see a potential trip hazard, would you still wait for the health and safety officer to remove it or would you do it yourself? You should actively take part in keeping your workplace safe.
These pointers will help keep everyone safe at work:
• When working at height, make sure that you use strong ladder or you step on something that can hold your weight. You should be comfortable standing on the ladder or a tall object. There should be some people assisting you. You shouldn’t be bending for your tools. You should wear tool belts so that you can put everything that you need in the belt. Working at height is very risky. You should plan your work first before you do it.
• Clear the floor of objects that are potential trip hazards. Stapler, puncher, big boxes and other objects that can potentially trip your workmate over should be removed. Don’t leave any object on the walkway. If you have to leave objects on the floor, keep them on the side so they will not be blocking the walkway. If the floor is uneven, mark it. You can highlight the uneven part with paint. You can put a sign so that workers will know that the floor is uneven.
• Slipping is a common workplace accident. Water, slippery objects, glue, oil and other objects that can cause workers to slip should be removed. If they will not be removed right away, make a clear sign that warns the workers about the hazard of slipping on that part of the workplace.
• There should be fire drills and fire information dissemination. The workers should know the fire plan. They should know what to do and where to go in case of fire. They should be informed of all the fire exits, location of fire extinguishers and fire alarms, and the contact information of people in charge.
Workplaces have health and safety department. This department is responsible in keeping the safety of the workplace and the workers. But as a good and concerned worker, you should do your part to keep safety. Don’t just rely everything on the H&S department.
