GM Recalls 14,245 Cadillac DTS and V8 Buick Lucerne Models

by Daniel Robert | Automotive > Switch Category
Automaker General Motors is recalling 14,245 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne cars with V8 engines. According to the GM the vehicles has a starter or alternator cable that is wrongly coming in contact with the power steering return line. The company is targeting model year 2010 and 2011 Lucerne and DTS vehicles. According to a letter on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, the recall is announced following reports of two fires. These fires are related to electrical arcing triggered by leaking fluid coming into contact with the starter or alternator cable.

According to the automaker the starter and alternator cables were incorrectly installed so they touch a power-steering line, as stated in the letter to NHTSA, the U.S. auto-safety regulator.

According to the Detroit, Michigan-based auto giant GM

* This contact could cause the cable to wear through the power steering line
* The wearing out of cable can cause the power steering fluid to leak
* This leak will sooner or later lead to the loss of power steering
* This kind of contact also may wear away the cable protective wrap, conduit and wire insulation
* If there is metal-to-metal contact, which could result in battery drain
* If the exposed battery cable separates from the power-steering line, there could be enough sparks for a hole to be melted in the line
* If the power steering fluid contacts hot metal parts of the engine, there could be a fire,

There have been four fires reported but there have been no injuries or fatalities associated with this problem. GM will repair the cars, which are under warranty, free of charge to owners.

GM this year has recalled 1.53 million cars and trucks for a windshield-wiper flaw that may cause fires and 303,100 Impala cars in the U.S. because seat belts in the front seat may not be properly anchored and may fail to restrain passengers in a crash. General Motors is recalling nearly 14,000 sedans to address potential problems with power steering.

Chrysler recall

* Chrysler is recalling about 16,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs to fix faulty windshield wiper systems
* Chrysler’s recall involves some of the 2008 model year Jeep Liberty SUVs
* Water could get into the windshield wiper motor and stop the wipers
* If the wipers fail it reduces a driver’s visibility and may lead to a crash
