Basics In Transferring Car Registration Numbers

by Tony Saro | Automotive > Switch Category
There are quite a number of instances when you have to transfer car registration. For instance, you have purchased a personalised car registration before and now you want to transfer it to your car already. Or you may have purchased a new car registration from a private owner and want to transfer it to your own car.

The good thing about car registration numbers is that you can buy them or sell them. If you want a particular number and that number is already in private hands, you can negotiate with the number holder and buy the registration from him. In the same manner, if you hold a personalised car registration and want to sell, you can do it. You can negotiate with the buyer directly or you can advertise through a car registration dealer or supplier.

Transfer Registration Through Retention And From Another Car

Transferring car registration is very easy as long as you have the complete documents required by the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency or DVLA. The process for completing the transfer varies a bit if you are transferring car registration through retention and from another car. By retention, it means that you have held ownership of the car registration and it isn’t used by a car yet. From another car means that the registration is currently used by another car.

If the car registration is from retention, you use DVLA documents V750 or V778. You will have to present ownership of the registration. You may have a certificate of entitlement with you. This will help in processing the transfer. You have to prove that you have the right to use the car registration.

If the car registration will be transferred from vehicle to another, you have to fill up Form V317. You can get this form from the DVLA office. Documents should be for both cars involved in the transfer. You can check out the DVLA website for the list of documents required to transfer registration from one car to another.

The cost of car registration transfer and assigning of number plate ranges from £80 to £105 depending on the kind of transfer that you are making. The transfer process would take up to 4 weeks depending on the volume of those who are requesting for transfer. But more often than not, in as little as 10 days, the process will be completed. They just give a time frame of 4 weeks so you wouldn’t expect early processing and complain later on if your request for transfer of car registration hasn’t been completed yet within the short time frame given.
