Finding ways to increase MPG and decrease fuel consumption is a major subject in this day and age. High gas prices are hurting almost everyone who drives a car but obviously it's particularly difficult for those who have a long commute to work. The gases saving methods posted on the Internet are seemingly becoming vaster as the fuel prices increase. Everyone seems to have an idea of what methods will save gas.
Fuel economy is a hot topic, and no doubt you're looking for ways that you can get better fuel economy. Following are a few simple things that you can do to start getting better fuel economy and save on gas.
Believe it or not, the driving habits of individual people can make a drastic difference in the fuel economy of a car, and the best part is they are very cheap or cost nothing. Cars use the most fuel when starting the engine and accelerating from a dead stop. If stopping somewhere for only a brief minute, keeping the engine running, will use the same amount of fuel as stopping the engine and restarting again.
Accelerating a car gradually from a stop and when at cruising speeds is a drastic fuel saver. Quick acceleration by flooring the gas pedal will get great response but also use the most fuel in the engine. When coasting down a hill or coming to a stop, dropping the transmission into neutral has been a long time method to achieving better gas mileage.
A manual transmission will save more gas by being more fuel efficient than an automatic transmission. The manual transmission will allow the driver to shift earlier than an automatic, which will keep the RPM low which saves gas.
The tire and wheel size are a large determinant of fuel mileage. You will save more gas if you have a smaller wheel and tire. Low rolling resistance tires are designed for fuel economy. Many hybrid vehicles come equipped with low rolling resistance tires straight from the factory.
Drive slower. This is another tough one to do. But your car will burn less gas per mile when you drive slower.
Parking in the shade will keep your gas tank cooler and help to slow down the evaporation process and improve gas mileage and don’t forget to turn off your air conditioner if you don’t use it. Air conditioner makes your car burn more gas.
Vehicles that are routinely serviced get significantly better gas mileage as well as just plain lasting longer on the road. Make sure that you perform routine maintenance on your car regularly to insure that it continues to operate at an optimum level. Use a quality fuel additive for improved gas mileage.
